Ideation -

Product sketching and Concept process

_There’s a method to the madness.

_Create. Iterate. Refine.

_Find a way to bring it to Life.

It doesn’t always have to be fancy but make sure to get your ideas down. Whether it is words, concepts, product sketches, etc….

Your idea could be drawn on a napkin or recorded as a voice memo on your phone… it doesn’t matter.

Just getting something down is half the battle and allows you to begin the creative process.

On body

Drawing something on the body allows you to see where movement might affect the person using the design. The goal is to better understand where the friction points are and be able to address issues or feature benefits.

Feature adds

Innovation can be subtle. Whether a feature allows for breathability, protects against abrasion, or a simple pocket construction for added storage. It is nice to list out and draw out individual parts to your design.

Refine.

Drawing multiple of the same/similar designs - Allows for a comparative analysis. This can help clarify what works or doesn’t work within. your design. I may also lead to new understanding or ideas.

FABRIC + FIT + FEATURES

Durability, stretch, and Breathability all play a key factor in performance apparel. Whether you are competing at the professional level or out with friends on the weekend, the apparel you choose should perform to the highest standards.

Never add just for the sake of adding. What features do consumers need? What features create value? What is your price point? Integrated stretch panels, laser perforated breathability zones, lightweight taped seams, minimalist velcro waist adjustments, zippered security storage, etc…

HOW WILL THE APPAREL BE WORN?

Will your design be layered, mixed & matched, or fully outfitted specifically to the environment in which they are worn?

ACCESSORIES: FIT + DURABILITY + CONTROL

As an example: MTB gloves provide the key contact points between the rider and the bike. Whether you're diving through corners, sending it off jumps, or protecting yourself mid-crash - you're going to want the confidence and trust in the control, fit, and durability of your gloves.

The tech Pack

Once the idea has been concepted, it’s important to continue through the Tech sketch phase of design. This part is one of the most critical and detail-oriented pieces to the puzzle. This will essentially be the “Build plan” with design notes, feature callouts, and technical specifications for Fabrics, fit, and features. The better the tech pack the easier it will be for a manufacturer to recreate or produce a given design.
